MARCUS KING

How did you get into the industry?

I have always had an interest, ever since a very young boy, in cutting people's hair. My family and friends can attest to that fact, notably from when I 'performed' my first hair cut at the age of 12. My 3 year old sister, who had beautiful curly hair at the time, was lured in to be the lucky one to experience her very own 'Marcus hair cut'. Unfortunately for her, it didn't work out quite as planned, and left my mother reeling and me residing in my uncle's house for a week. Everyone has to start somewhere right? But thankfully, during the many years I've worked in the industry, I've learned a thing or two about hairdressing and now I can safely say that my younger sister is very happy to have me cut her hair for her.

Well aside from the above, I have always had a creative eye and a passion for fashion and design. Coupled with my interest in hairdressing, this led me to enrol at the prestigious Vidal Sassoon Academy in Mayfair, where I trained and learned my craft and earned my qualifications, something I'm very proud of and feel I'm privileged to have achieved. I went on to work at a number of high profile salons in central London, Chelsea, South Kensington and Knightsbridge before I opened my own salon here at Marcus' Hair Studio, in Fulham.

What makes you different to other hair stylist's?

Everyone is unique in their own way, especially in this industry. You have to be in order to be successful. For me, I believe the most important thing is quality. This applies to all aspects of the job- from the haircut you perform, the salon environment you create for your clients to the products you use. Here at Marcus' Hair Studio, I try to create the perfect ambience so that my clients can relax and enjoy their time here. In addition, I use what I believe to be the best products out there in the market- the Alterna product range, which helps leave clients' hair in the best possible condition that it can be.

When did you decide to open up your own salon?

Throughout my career, I have always aspired to open my own salon. So much so, over the years, I have collected items which my clients can now see dotted throughout the salon. I have always wanted Marcus' Hair Studio to be unique, and in doing so, I have endeavoured not to follow the tried and tested formulae that most other salons have always used. I am a creative person and I hope my clients can see this come out through in each carefully selected item and decision that I have made for the salon, to bring it to where it is today.

The story behind the beautiful interior design?

Living in London brings with it some adverse weather, and as such, I wanted to create a warm and cosy environment for my clients, and take them away from the world outside. There are so many salons out there in London which are soulless, with little or no thought put in to decoration or creating an ambience. I feel creating the perfect ambience is a vital component of a successful salon, where clients can feel relaxed and enjoy their experience, and leave looking forward to the next time they come back to us. Making them comfortable is key to the experience we provide them.

What expert advice would you give to someone who knows very little about hair?

There are many old wives tales and home remedies that people have used throughout the years to help the condition of their hair. A couple that I would personally recommend would be applying one egg yolk and a tablespoon of white rum mixed together to your hair or, applying some mayonnaise to your hair (the olive oil, garlic and eggs are all very nourishing for your hair). Leave either of these remedies in your hair for forty minutes and then wash it out thoroughly. This should leave your hair feeling smooth and silky.

How often do you recommend someone to get their hair cut?

I recommend for people to get their hair cut about every eight to twelve weeks. This keeps the hair healthier and in a much better condition than leaving it for long periods between each cut. Ultimately, this will make your hair grow faster, and look and feel better.
